03 Jul Second Run for AMOURICE at Newmarket on Saturday 1st July
AMOURICE looked very fit and well in the sunshine at Newmarket on Saturday. There had been 2.5mm of rain on Friday night and the official going today was Good to Soft. Following the deluge earlier in the week, the grass gallops at Newmarket had been closed to protect them and therefore, it had not been possible to gallop AMOURICE of soft ground to see how she would act on it and so today was always going to be a test although AMOURICE’s breeding suggested that she would.
Our first and second choice of jockeys, Martin Dwyer and Stevie Donohoe, had already been claimed to ride at York and therefore, Jane booked Liam Jones who as a small jockey, would be able to sit in to AMOURICE should she “have a moment” again.
AMOURICE cantered down to post nicely with her head up taking in everything. However, she was reluctant to go into the stalls although this should improve with more experience.
Sadly, AMOURICE missed the break and the ground that she lost at the start was difficult to make up in a Listed Class 1 race over 6 furlongs. She came up the rails which in her first race had helped to guide her and at one point, she seemed unsure when asked to pass another horse which had come over towards her. However, she was running on at the end which backs up the feeling that 7 furlongs is her distance.
Assuming that AMOURICE comes out of the race well, Jane would like to run her at Newmarket again at the July Meeting on Saturday 15th over 7 furlongs.
